2010 Sakura Medal Winners!

The books are read, the reviews are written, and the voting is done.  Students at international schools across Japan have come together to make their voices heard, and have selected the following books as winners of the 2010 Sakura Medal:

Picture Books:  The Pencil by Allan Ahlberg

Chapter Books: Sisters of the Sword by Maya Snow

Middle School: The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins

High School: Numbers by David A. Poulsen

Japanese Picture Books: 100かいだてのいえ by 岩井 俊雄

Japanese Intermediate (tie!): ナニワのMANZAIプリンセス (ノベルズ・エクスプレス) by 荒井 寛子 and はなこ 八月七日にひろったこねこ by なりゆき わかこ

Japanese High School: 告白 by 湊 かなえ

Thank you to everyone who participated and voted in this year’s program!  Feel free to keep the discussion about any of this year’s books going both online and with your friends.  The Japan International School librarians group is meeting very soon to work on selections for the 2011 Sakura Medal, so keep an eye on this space!

2009 Sakura Medal WINNERS!

After months of reading and great debate, all schools have cast their votes for this year’s favourites. It was a close race in every category, but ultimately the following books came out on top:

Picture Books: Penguin by Polly Dunbar
Chapter Books: The Name of This Book is Secret by Pseudonymous Bosch
Middle School: Unwind by Neal Shusterman
High School: The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
Japanese Picture Books: ふしぎなでまえ (Fushigi na demae) by かがくい ひろし (Hiroshi Kagakui)
Japanese Middle/High School: 夢をかなえるゾウ (Yume o kanaeru zo) by 水野敬也 (Keiya Mizuno)

Congratulations to all of the winners, and thank you to those students who participated in this year’s program. The selections for the 2010 Sakura Medal program will be announced soon and we hope you’re ready for some more great reading!
