  1. To be fair, I was (and still am) completely enamoured with the Kite Runner, so I knew going into this book that Hosseini certainly had his work cut out for him following that one up. And he almost did it.

The characters and their stories in this book are probably more troubled than those in the Kite Runner, but I felt that the ending was perhaps a little too neat and tidy. Still, this book looks at the situation in Afghanistan from quite a different lens (although I’m not sure that a male writer can ever really truthfully convey a woman’s perspective) than Hosseini’s earlier work, and the storyline is equally compelling.

Had it been written by someone else who hadn’t already been so successful with something like the Kite Runner, I probably would have liked this book even more. Still, I’ll give it a solid 4 out of 5.
